Sheriff’s Association Endorsement: Clarifying

[Note: I found Jason Westmoreland's response after I posted this; his post is linked below]

I was told last night that the Ellis County Sheriff’s Association endorsed Johnny Brown for sheriff.

I do believe, however, that a special committee made up of the political action arm of the ECSA was the body that voted unanimously to endorse Brown.

The PAC has every right to endorse or not endorse.

So to say the entire association was on board wasn’t really clarified. I apologize to Brown for any misunderstanding.

(maybe that’s why my advice for every elected official and their agency to have a PR person that does this stuff for a living would make sense)

Joey,

On 02-22-2008 the Ellis County Sheriff’s Officers Association Political Action Committee endorsed the candidacy of Johnny Brown for Ellis County Sheriff. Although the vote was unanimous from the Political Action Committee, the vote was not unanimous from all members of the Association, and I would like to clarify that, especially for the subject above, who claimed that he/she did not get to vote. That person is correct in some ways, (but not all) because the members themselves did not directly vote on this matter since it was set up through a Committee.

The Sheriff’s Officer Association recently approved the appointment a Political Action Committee by a unanimous vote of the Board of Directors in attendance at that meeting. Johnny Brown, who at that time was on the Board of Directors, was absent from that meeting, and chose to be absent and abstain from voting. Johnny Brown has since resigned from the Board of Directors against my wishes to alleviate the possibility of anyone claiming he had a conflict of interest.

The Political Action Committee is a separate entity from the Sheriff’s Officers Association. The Committee is required to have a campaign treasurer on file with the Ethics Commission in Austin, Texas, and it can be verified that we are in compliance with those rules and regulations through the State. There is no money exchanged between the groups, and it is against the law for the Political Action Committee to spend Association money on the Committee’s activities. As of this date, the Committee has not raised nor donated any money.

The Political Action Committee was appointed under the Association’s current bylaws. There are two types of committees, and this Committee was a committee of Directors, which means that the Committee had the power of the Association. The Committee, which I did appoint, consisted of myself and two other Directors, which meets the criteria under our bylaws.

The Committee was contacted by the campaign of Steve McKinney, and we met with Mr. McKinney a few weeks back for approximately 1 hour. During that discussion we talked of many issues confronting the Sheriff’s Office and its employees.

I personally invited James Ledbetter to speak with the Political Action Committee, and he respectfully declined to meet with us, stating that he was in the process of withdrawing from the Association, which he and several of his supporters have done in the last few weeks.

The Committee also met with Johnny Brown, and went over the same areas that we covered with Mr. McKinney.

Mr. Brown and Mr. McKinney share many goals for the Sheriff’s Office, and they also are different in many ways, too numerous to go into detail here.

After taking into consideration the best interests of the current employees of the Sheriff’s Office, the Committee made the determination that Mr. Brown and his plans for the Sheriff’s Office best fit the needs of the employees of the Department. Mr. Ledbetter was not considered since he would not meet with us and share his goals or plans for the Department.

There are members of the Association that do not agree with the decision of the Committee to endorse any candidate. Those employees fear retaliation from the candidate not endorsed if that particular candidate wins, or they are angry because they support one of the other candidates.

The Sheriff’s Association by nature is a political machine. It exists solely for the purpose of making the Sheriff’s Office a better place to work for its members. The only way to make changes in the County Government to benefit employees is to become involved in the political arena, and I know firsthand that the arena of politics isn’t always pleasant.

The endorsement of Johnny Brown doesn’t take anything away from Steve McKinney. He is a good law enforcement officer with a decorated career, and would make a good Sheriff if elected. The Committee just felt as though he is not the right man for the job at this time for the employees of the Sheriff’s Office. Its hard to have an opinion about Ledbetter when he would not give us any answers.

There are supporters of Mr. McKinney and Mr. Ledbetter that will come onto this blog and try to nullify what has been said or say they didn’t support this and they are well within their right to make those comments.

There were 5 members, including Mr. Ledbetter that resigned from the Association a few weeks back. I am happy to announce that we had 5 new members join at our last meeting! The Association looks forward to the elections and encourages everyone to vote, regardless of party affiliation or candidate choice. Although the gentlemen that resigned will believe this is a direct attack on them, I would like to say that I wish they had stayed with the organization to make it stronger, rather than leave the organization because of their differences with myself or other members. They seem to have given up on the Democratic process, which makes this country and County great. The power to vote affects everyone, including myself. I wish they would have stayed to vote the current Board of Directors out of office, rather than give up. They are welcome back anytime, as we still work side by side everyday. I have the same great respect for them today, as I did last week, or last year. And that includes Mr. Ledbetter.

If any other political candidates wish to speak with our Political Action Committee, please contact me, and we will be happy to set up an appointment with you. Mr. Ramsey did address our meeting, but has not requested any endorsement, and none is planned at this time. No other endorsements have been made by the Association at this time.

The first time I posted this it said there was an error so if it posts twice I apologize.

Funny how when everyone else screws up it is a coverup. When Brown and his bunch get exposed for what they are, it simply “wasn’t clarified”. What’s up with that?

  • Well it was a clarification on my part that needed to be posted.

There are two separate “bodies” of people: the ECSA and the committee formed for the exact purpose of endorsing or not endorsing.

  • The bottom line is that it was done wrong and not with the support of the members of the association…I don’t care what is said…a committee which was formed by JASON without the support of the members is wrong….

It’s funny how the news was given to you first and not even posted on the association website….

Wouldn’t you think that you would want to first inform your members of the news before they read about it on the BLOG…exactly my point here something is not right…THEY did this with the sole purpose of their political agenda without regard for the members they are supposed to be representing…how is that right??? It’s not…

  • Actually, I had one of the ECSO deputies tell me when I waited outside the door at the Joe Barton executive committee event.

The vote had just happened, so the news was about 30 minutes fresh.

  • Sounds like your committee has a problem if its losing alot of members all of a sudden. Maybe its because of who runs it!!!

  • Why did he sign his name with Jason Westmoreland President, Ellis County Sheriff’s Officers Association?

When This sounds to me like it had nothing to do with the Ellis County Sheriff’s Officers Association. It apparently had to do with a PAC set up by this guy??? A PAC is separate from a Association.

Sounds to me like he’s trying to trick the Voters

  • Joey,
I think the real problem is less then 10 percent of the asociation members bother to be involved at all unless of they want to complain. These groups can be powerfull and have a loud voice if it’s members will participate. Government is not a line at the fast food franchise where you pull up when you want somethig. Many of the candidates cant tell you when they have been to a Commisioneers Court meeting. In fact one Commisioneers candidate that happens to be a sheriffs department employee didn’t know where the County Judges office is located. This man didn’t know that JP and Commisioneers Pcts. were not the same and accused his opponent of not living in his Pct.. Get involved and know what you speak of or we may have to issue aptitude test before you can run for office.

  • we might need to issue similar tests to some to the bloggers here as well…..

Big John, that issue has been addressed before and that Westmoreland person obviously has an ego problem because he has to make sure that everyone knows who he is and what function he has, who cares I know???

You are 100% correct in that it is a trick, they are little tricksters, smoking mirrors…more of the same from that Brown camp…

  • As usual, dirty little deeds done in the dark, by the usual suspects! I am amazed at the many excuses and mouth to mouth manipulation I hear down there. Just another day in Ellis County, especially Waxahachie.

  • Enough of this you guys, grow up! Decide who you are going to vote for and do it! In the mean time SHUT YOUR PIE HOLES! Take it from a fellow officer that is not “caught up in the chase” You are making the whole damn profession look bad. YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE “A NOTCH ABOVE” REMEMBER THAT? STOP THIS PUBLIC STUPIDITY! JUST GROW UP AND STOP IT!

Do you have any idea what the public is going to think of you when you keep this public nanny nanny boo boo going on??

  • maybe OMG should run for sheriff! Sounds like he has a grip on the big picture.

  • Finally, an officer with some sense. Way to go omg. Go to the other part of this thread, (before clarifying) and read what I put and how it was answered. They just tarnished the badge they wear. Once again, KODO’S to omg.

  • I hate to have to call anybody down but it looks like somebody needs to.

  • not a brownie or a ledbetter
    February 23, 2008 at 7:33 pm

I think it’s kind of funny that the brownies can secure the Ellis County Sheriff’s Association endorsement (because they control it) but dont have any other endorsements. I guess it’s kind of hard to secure an endorsement when Jason isn’t the president.

Oh yea I forgot about Larry Burns and Terry Nay…WOW… what an endorsement a used car salesman and a part time constable.

Mr. McKinney didn’t need their endorsement anyway. At least he took the time to speak to them.

I do find it funny that all of the ledbetter supporters are on here slamming the brownies and the association for not endorsing their man. Come on guys your man Ledbetter dropped out of the association and then refused to speak to them.

Fact is Mr. McKinney is the right man for the job. Ledbetter will be 90 when his term is up in 4 yrs. and he is really a democrat that can’t make up his mind what he stands for.
Brown needs to get more expeirence in something other than dope. He’s been a dope cop tooooooo long.

Keep up the bickering and Mr. Mckinney and his Chief Deputy will fix the problems and the turmoil when they shows up Jan. 1st, 2009

  • Who’s whining now? Call a spade a spade and the brownies start crying….boo hoo

  • I beg to differ with you Mr. not Brown or Ledbetter, I feel pretty confident that the Ledbetter supporters across the table would be willing to work with Mr. McKinney and his staff should he win…we can’t say that about Brown because they have used every dirty trick in the book throughout this whole election….every one, we have no time for it…we are tired of the lies, strongarmed tactics, and deceit througout his camp….they never fail to amaze as to what they will do next…we don’t need that in our sheriff’s department.

  • I find this pretty funny……………JUST becasue BROWN, McKinney, and Ledbetter supporters are running their mouths, mudslinging, and acting stupid does NOT mean that is the CANDIDATE themself. I have heard just as much mudslinging from the Ledbetter and McKinney camps as well. Stop with all the immature bullcrap, and just let ALL THE VOTERS of Ellis County make their decisions. Ya’ll act like this blog and what you have to say is going to when the election. Granted, yes ppl do read this blog, and I can guarantee alot of them probably find it pretty funny that grown adults are on here acting like this AND they are the ones that are currently working for ECSO.

  • amen, and I promise you they have a different view of ECSO than they would have if this BS wasn’t handled like it was.

    What a bunch of bafoons!

  • justagrirl westmoreland, why don’t you just go back to class since you can’t seem to add anything beneficial to the conversation….or go drink a beer with your dope cop buddy omg….down with brown

  • I am not a dope cop nor do I drink any form of alcohol. I have already voicied my opinion and sealed the deal when I voted for Johnny Brown last week.

I wish you would close your mouth and promote your candidate instead of showing how stupid you are.

  • blahblahblah……………you need to know what your talking bout before you open your mouth. I dont even know why you sid justagrirl westmoreland, because I have NOTHING to do with Jason Westmoreland, nor do I drink beer OR hang out w/ dope cops.

Your not adding anything beneficial to the conversation either. I’m stating MY OPINION, which people seem to agree with what I had to say.

Its so funny how you talk all this crap about “dope cops”.THANK GOD for our narcotics division, because they’re actually the ones trying to get the crap out of Ellis County, and keep it out.

  • yea thank god for the division, we just need a new group staffing it….everyone on here talks crap, it’s just when it gets directed at you when it becomes an issue….get over it…

  • blah you can talk crap under a false name.boy that is real mature.why don’t you go back to your stealing friends or the rapist that run the streets thanks to the da.

  • oh that’s original..how bout bill johnson….that help ya any chris? da

  • Ok, I dropped my false name do my comments say anything different, NO. Tell me this, everyone who reads and/or participates on this blog knows exactly what it is all about…you know that your feathers may get ruffled, you might get some truth but you could get some false, you could even get a mixture but everyone knows….there is not a polygraph exam attached to it so for you folks who like to gasp and say “oh my how can they talk like that on here”, you guys need to get over it….If you can’t stand the heat get out….no one is forcing you to participate…If you don’t like the service that Joey provides, go to another blog that breaks it open….I’m a little concerned about Joey over his non-actions with Mr. Brown but overall he’s getting it done…this is a privately owned blog which you choose to come to so you guys like OMG, CALVIN MICHAELS, JUSTATRICK, and whoever else that cry and moan about what is getting said need to get over it…maybe your bossman brown will let you make one for you guys to play on since you can’t hang with the big boys on Joey’s blog…happy monday to you!!!

  • What's going on?
    February 26, 2008 at 9:04 am

Well, to OMG and others, I for one want to know that when the ECSOA endorsed Mr. Brown, it was not supported by all its members. I think its important for the voters to know that. Maybe you don’t, but I do. All law enforcement officers and their families know about the sneaky tactics of Jason Westmorland, but the rest of the public doesn’t. Someone needs to tell them and if this blog is how they get it, then so be it. So, to you, this is a freedom of speech issue and you have no right to tell others to shut their pie holes. nuff said…

  • “bill johnson” you’re about the most immature dumbass on this blog. You blame “brown” for everything thats going on, but I have this whole thing figured out. Its not BROWNS party that is starting crap. Is people like YOU that start all this crap, and then turn around and blame it on Brown. I cant WAIT to meet you face to face on March 4th, so I can LAUGH IN YOUR FACE when your beloved McKinney gets buried 6ft under the ground when the elections are over!!!!!!!!!

  • OH BTW ECSOA are NOT the only ones that have endorsed Brown. Can you please tell me who has endorsed McKinney & Ledbetter? I honestly dont know, and I’m curious

  • Endorisments are great, I say if you have to have a co-signer that means your credit is bad. Johnny Brown’s credit and word is good. Ladies and gentlemen, the time has come for everybody to shut up and vote! May the best candidate win. I pray a week from today we can all get behind the new Sheriff and come back together.

  • I voted Brown yesterday. How Come it seemed that a position with over three candidates was listed alphabetically but the Sheriff listing went Mckinney, Brown ,Ledbetter (James a Ledbetter)

  • They draw for position on the ballot. They drew last month

  • Tuddle, ballot selection is drawn by a lottery system.

It’s just who gets picked on the ballot first, second, third, etc.

  • Re ballot selection

    But not for Presidential candidates

Any statistic for position on ballot to placing in actual vote totals?

  • I’ve never seen the statistic, but it’s thought there are many people who vote for the first name on the list. I’ve spoken to people who claim to have done that, but obviously they couldn’t give me any reason that made sense. Unbelievable, isn’t it?
