Bardwell Chief Found “Asleep At The Wheel”
It was an interesting night for Bardwell Police Chief Michael Spurgeon. Volunteer firefighters discovered the Bardwell Chief on a stretch of county road near the Navarro County line asleep in his squad car. Volunteer firefighters, unable to awake the Chief, contacted the Ellis County Sheriff’s Department who dispatched a deputy to the location. The Chief was on the border of the Navarro/Ellis County line, in uniform in the city police car- asleep at nearly midnight over the weekend. This was an interesting call on the scanner to say the least. Question- Why was the Bardwell Chief so far out of the city, on a county road, asleep close to midnight, in uniform and in the police car? Better Why was he difficult to wake, forcing the firefighters to call Ellis County dispatch? Medical condition? Drunkedness? We can bet it wasn’t a medical condition, since there was no ambulance called.

It does not suprise me that a Bardwell PD would be that far outside his or her jurisdiction. On many occasions has the Bardwell Pd been spotted well past Mott Park on 985 and sometimes down on sandswitch road.

I have seen Michael Spurgeon, the Chief buying beer in the city police car, I have seen him drunk in the police car (after a function where he was in uniform drinking), and I have seen him in the Dallas area escorting funeral processions and 18 wheelers *construction* vehicles in the city police car. The bull$hit has got to stop. I was in Ennis last week when he was getting his hair cut in uniform. This whole charade of him working for Bardwell is nothing more than a scam- and a way for him to make big bucks on the city dime. All he does is get his gas paid for by the city- uses the city car, and rakes in both a city check and his off duty checks. Getting drunk on the side of the road, passed out? Give me a break. Someone needs to get this guy outta there.

We don’t know if he was drunk because there was no breathalizer test from all reports. I’d love to see the officer reports from the various officials that were on scene or contacted.

I wonder what county road he was on? Not only that, but the only road besides dirt roads that go to the Ellis/Navarro border is 55 out of Avalon. If he was on 55, what was he doing there? I know from friends in the Navarro S/O that 55 in the north side is an area in Navarro county on which they make a lot of traffic stops and run into Narcottics trafficing. If he was not “assisting”, and was found unresponsive by fire fighting volunteers, what was he doing there? Smoking weed and falling asleep like most stoners? Drinking and passing out? Using prescription drugs? What makes a man unresponsive other than narcotics or exhuastion? Why wasn’t there a field sobriety check if there wasn’t one? Needless to say if Crow T Robot was found unresponsive behind the wheel of the Satellite of Love or SOL ( by the way i think the chief may be a different kind of SOL ) he’d been pulled out of the car, searched, the vehicle searched, and field tested for intoxication or being under the influence of narcotics at the very least. Maybe he was taking a cat nap?

Ledbetter will need a job in a couple weeks, maybe they will take him. He has been a chief of a one horse town before.

Thats interesting. Times in the past that drug runners have been known to use the chambers creek, low water bridge area. Now that being said, why would a bardwell pd officer be on such a stretch of dirt road? So far out of his jurisdiction? Has anyone really looked into the buisness dealings of the officer in question? But I degress, if he was doing something such as drug running he would not be as stupid as to fall asleep in his squad car. As a citizen that works in majority of Ellis county I’ve seen more than my share of strange goings on down in that area. I’m not sure if anything was going on, but the officer needs to be questioned about being so far outside his jurisdiction at the least.

Michael Spurgeon has been known to smoke weed after he and Michael Meissner took it off of people in the past. He is also an alcoholic. My guess is he probably was drunk (he gets really beet red), or he was smoking some of the stash from the PD. His wife, Shannon, and Meissner have all smoked dope with Michael Spurgeon, the Chief. How do I know this? They used to buy it across the street from me and sit out front and light up. I know what that green grass smells like….

I’d not have a problem with him being a stoner, but the rub is that he needs to do that in his own home if he wishes. I don’t see anything wrong with the use of marijauna, I’ve never seen a stoner get high and start a drunken brawl, but i have seen liquor and spirits have that effect. The worst you might get from a stoner is some drool over brownies. But even if weed was legal I would have a problem with a law enforcement official using while on duty or before.

A person smoking weed should not be driving. They endanger others lives as much as someone drinking and driving. Marijuana is currently illegal so a person in law enforcement should not be partaking in any manner.

Don’t these guys go through drug tests periodically? If not, shouldn’t they?
